Is Your Athlete Ready for Showcase Ball?

The biggest mistake parents make isn't going too late—it's going too early.

Every summer, families spend thousands chasing showcase tournaments for 12- and 13-year-olds, hoping to get "noticed."

But here’s the reality:

The player dominating at U13 often isn't the player getting recruited at U17.

Puberty changes athletes. Work ethic changes athletes. Confidence changes athletes. Skill development changes athletes.

The 13-year-old who is physically ahead may plateau, while the athlete who commits to development can make huge strides over the next four years.

So when should you start?

  • U13–U14: Focus on learning the game, developing athleticism, and building technical skills—not exposure.

  • U15: Begin experiencing higher levels of competition and learning what showcase environments look like.

  • U16–U17: This is when showcase events become much more valuable, especially if your athlete has the skills, academic goals, and interest in playing at the next level.

Remember...

Exposure without development is just expensive participation.

College coaches don't recruit who was the best at 13. They recruit who is ready at 16, 17, and 18.

Invest in becoming a better athlete before investing in being seen.

At ATHLIVIUM, we believe development creates opportunity—not the other way around.

Question for parents and coaches: Would you rather your athlete peak at 13... or be ready when the recruiters are actually watching?
